Name Game

One of the things I hate most about NaNoWriMo is coming up with names. I suck at creating names for my characters. I have been wracking my brain for the past several days and I only have 1 character name. They always seem to sound too juvenile, too Conan the Barbarianesque, or too Porno. At least I still have over two weeks to create names that don't sound too horrible. Does anyone out there have any good ideas on name generation?

that's too funny: just this morning in the shower I was doing the character name game!!!

I don't have an easy answer there -- I was even looking at the keyboard, wondering which of my name choices would be easiest to type fro NaNoWriMo where speed & word count counts! Hmmmm.... does a double-word name like Mary Ellen or John Boy count as two words??? I know hyphenated words only counts as one, so Jean-Claude is only one word --- too long to type for only getting credit for one !

I know there are books like 2 zillion names for your baby, but are there websites like that, too? I would assume so.... gonna have to Google it...

Fyi- two word names do count as two words. . . hence some of my characters have titles (Penelope the Princess Warrior is the only one I have named).

Look up name meanings and make them fit the characters. People who know what certain names mean will give you extra points for sure. It's all in the details, right? Design is important in any endeavour. I'm also adding dictionary.com and thesaurus.com into my bookmark toolbar for easy access. I'd also suggest looking up symbolism, myths, folklore, color symbolism, and things like that. That's what I'm doing at least.

Oh... just Googled "symbolism" and there are some great references on the first page of search results, including Symbolism.org (lots of medieval symbols, that you'll find useful).

as well as others

only thing here, no symbols/meanings like at other baby name sites

but this one was cool for the lists
morgen (German for "morning")

Take you mother's maiden name and pair it with the street where you grew up.

So for me, that would be Rice Estes. Good southern-sounding name. Good luck!
