Cafe Conversations

This isn't so much a conversation as it is a big old WTF!?!

I'm working behind the counter when I hear one of my co-workers on the loudspeaker announcing "I have a little boy at customer services looking for his mother. He is about two years old. Will the mother please come to customer services."
Okay, things happen and kids wander away. Not an ideal situation but stuff happens. Five minutes later I hear her make the same announcement. Five minutes and the mother still hasn't managed to collect her kid. A couple of minutes later she comes through the cafe on her. . .wait for it. . .cell phone gabbing away saying "can you believe the big deal they made? It wasn't like he was lost or anything. Geez I was just trying to find a magazine and get a little peace and quiet. . ." and out the door she went still practically ignoring the child.

How much did I want to call someone on her. Peace and quiet? Sure, you'll have peace and quiet when some pervert kidnaps the kid you stupid woman. Sure, you are in a bookstore and it is a calm place but ANYBODY CAN COME IN!!!!!! What the hell? What if her kid gets taken? Then we get blamed all because she is so stupid and neglectful that she can't keep an eye on her freaking kid. Just thinking about it now makes me want to hunt her down and slap her really, really hard. What the hell are some of these people thinking?

Ugh! One of my biggest pet peeves is when parents don't WATCH what their kids are doing!
Usually when those kids get in trouble for misbehaving, the parents like to say "Oh, but MY child would never do anything like that."
!! How d'ya know, do you WATCH them often enough to know what kinds of crap they do??
Yup. She needs to be smacked.

(I'll calm down now. I promise. :)

I witnessed something similar while I was in Riverside Park with my 2 year old niece and my mother one day. There was a small boy, maybe 4 years old, standing there crying by the gate of the playground looking lost and confused. Alone. In a park. In New York City.

Before my mother and I could come to his rescue, another mother in the park comforted the child and stayed with him for at least 10 minutes until his idiot mother sauntered from across the playground, ON HER CELL PHONE, yanked the kid by the hand, and didn't even stop her phone conversation to comfort the child nor thank the lady who looked after him. WTF is right!

I agree WTF!!! She had to sign a contract to get a cell phone and get credit checks etc...all she had to do to get the kid was spread em....maybe she should have been made to sign a contract and she should have to pay per minute to have the pleasure of the kids company.

How incredibly sad. I hope the kid realizes very early that it's not him and he was just dealt a crappy mother.

Oh I so agree with Janna--it makes me NUTS how parents don't take care to monitor their chidren. AND if a situation arises where you might have to intervene out of safety they usually get all miffed that you would deem it your position to 'deal' with their child.
