The Death of The Gay Bar
The Orlando Sentinel had an interesting article on the Death of the Gay Bar. It laments the closing of several popular bars in Orlando and New York and seems to blame it on the fact that the gay movement has come so far and we are being "domesticated" so the need for gay bars is declining (combine that with the Internet and it is a good theory). I can see that but I also have to say that maybe someone could make a bar/ club that isn't seedy and doesn't suck. For years it seemed all someone had to do was slap a few dirty toilets in a warehouse, boom some base, and serve up liquor and people would flock cause we had nowhere else to go to meet people or to be ourselves. Now that we have a bit more freedom and options I think the challenge lies with the bar owners to up the ante and maybe put a little extra money and thought into their establishment to up that whole "seedy" feel. Granted having a night out at a dive does occasionally have appeal once in a great while but it would be nice to see someplace have a bit of class. It may be different elsewhere in the country but I know in Cleveland it always just felt like bars would open to suck the money out of the clientèle before the owners moved on to another venture.

If you haven't already tried it, I really like Q bar. There's a bar/gathering area in the front, a patio on the side, and a dance room in the back. You can dance if you want to without having to be a methed-out twink (like at Axis), and you're able to walk through the place without fear of catching a skin-eating bacteria (like at Tradewinds).
