You could totally make it vegetarian by swapping out the chicken base for vegetable base. It adds so much more flavor I think. Sorry you didn't like the recipe. Our did have a lot of flavor, maybe because the caramelized onion and of course the bacon. I wish I'd added mustard and cayenne like the farmer's wife.
